When assisting someone, let the person know what you are going to do (when possible and safe). I find it helps to face the person and explain, especially if they have cognitive or hearing problems. This way I don’t shock them, they understand what is going on and can even be involved in decision making. Plus, they can work with me to make the task a bit easier for both of us.
